A thermostat is an unassuming instrument on the wall, but it yields such great results when engaged. On the hottest day in August, by simply adjusting the temperature level down it will cool the room. On the coldest day in January, by simply adjusting the temperature level up it will warm the room. This is the same way I like to look at how I engage with people on a daily basis. I believe that I have the ability to adjust the environment of those I’m around by being a positive impact on them. When someone walks into my office or if I’m walking throughout the office with the opportunity to interact, I like to personally engage with them to see how they are doing and inject positivity into the atmosphere. Even if I only have a few moments, I like to meet with potential hires at the end of the interview process to get to know them and share with them the core values of our company. I want to build a relationship with the people who are part of making our company, Solavei, successful.

Being a leader is more than overseeing the strategies, operations and finances. I have carried the values instilled in me by my father, mother and grandparents into my position as CEO. My family instilled in me from an early age a passion to serve and to help others to have a better life. This is what it means to be a leader. Our company is “Generous, proactive and full of hope.” That has to be present throughout the company from my position and throughout all of our employees. This is why I, just as my parents and grandparents did for me, strive to instill the same passion in the employees and members of Solavei.

“A single relationship can change the lives of many.” I keep this in mind when I am considering a new commitment. I consider this while I take time for the board of Miss America, an organization that makes available 45 million dollars in college scholarships each year to bright young women. I consider this when I spend time with my four boys and my wife and I had this specifically in mind when I started Solavei.

I believe our time and work should be aligned with efforts to better our community, whether our community is our family, our city, our country or our world. I have personally found my experiences digging wells for water in Central Africa a deeply impactful experience. My wife continues to amaze me with her dedication to giving back and together we have worked to build this value into our son’s lives as well.

It is not only important to live a life where we work to build relationships that will change the lives of many but it is also important to live a life that will inspire others to live this way as well. Pass along not only your positive impact, but pass along your gift to have a positive impact.
